never been much of a blogger. ok, i've never been a blogger period.

so, i'll change this page occasionally at best.

10/16/08 radiohead - wow, radiohead. i think they are in a class of their own in modern music. and, i like their drummer's work 1/2 as much as stewart copeland from the police, so that instantly ranks him as one of my alltime favorite musicians! :0)

just really started listening to them like 10 months ago.  i never liked the song "creep", so didn't really pay much attention to them.

then i read about Bono saying that he was giving warning to radiohead's lead singer (thom yorke)that they were "reapplying for the job" of best band in the world with the release of "All that You Can't Leave Behind". so... at some point figured they had to be worth checking out if Bono was willing to concede that Radiohead had filled the vacuum of U2's absence.

so.. heard about "in rainbows" coming out for what you "decided to pay" on their website. downloaded it for free (sorry guys) b/c i didn't know if i'd ever listen to it twice or not. well, i liked it, especially for distance running training because of the amazing flow of the entire album , but still wouldn't have considered myself a big fan. maybe just a "respecter" of their abilities.

then a few months ago i took the boys on a trip to NYC. decided to pick up their new "greatest hits" album for the car ride home. well, it's late, we're driving home from NYC, the boys were starting to doze off and i popped in the CD, and it was just like song after song blew me away! they are incredible.

one of the things that i love about there stuff is that there is such beautiful complexity. the guitar layering, the unique drum and time signatures, and just phenomenal songwriting, i don't know... it just works. it must be a killer experience to play in such an environment.

they are also amazing live from what i can tell. check out the live stuff online. and for them to be able to pull off all of the layering and stuff. amazing

i really like using deep black sections of the canvas to contrast brighter colors and hues. never meant it intentionally (that I'm aware of) but it is a good metaphor for our lives. as much as we would like to have bright days all the time, it is the darker days that define our character.

i encourage anyone and everyone to paint. or draw. or even get out your kids' fingerpaints and have at it. there is a tremendous freedom and joy that comes with artistic expression when you free yourself from any expectation of the end result.

just enjoy the process!

take a few minutes and browse the web for some information on color theory 101.
learn about the "additive" and "subtractive" nature of light and pigments. it is simply amazing how adding more shades of light lead to white and adding more shades of pigment lead to black.

it's cool how using bright font colors for text on a black web page background creates a natural 3D effect.

THE COLOR GREEN

rich mullins was one of the greatest songwriters in modern history. i wonder how he felt when he finished writing these lyrics. he was a humble man, yet fiery in conviction. was he willing to recognize the beauty of genius in these words? i suppose he did, but probably was quick to credit the author of his faith as the same author of the lines.

And the moon is a sliver of silver
Like a shaving that fell on the floor of a Carpenter's shop
And every house must have it's builder
And I awoke in the house of God
Where the windows are mornings and evenings
Stretched from the sun
Across the sky north to south
And on my way to early meeting
I heard the rocks crying out
I heard the rocks crying out

Be praised for all Your tenderness by these works of Your hands
Suns that rise and rains that fall to bless and bring to life Your land
Look down upon this winter wheat and be glad that You have made
Blue for the sky and the color green that fills these fields with praise

And the wrens have returned and they're nesting
In the hollow of that oak where his heart once had been
And he lifts up his arms in a blessing for being born again
And the streams are all swollen with winter
Winter unfrozen and free to run away now
And I'm amazed when I remember
Who it was that built this house
And with the rocks I cry out

Be praised for all Your tenderness by these works of Your hands
Suns that rise and rains that fall to bless and bring to life Your land
Look down upon this winter wheat and be glad that You have made
Blue for the sky and the color green that fill these fields with praise
